Gifting

Three questions. By the end you will know what to give.

First: what do you want them to feel when they open it?

Not what you want them to have. What you want them to feel. They are different things and almost nobody separates them.

If the answer is that I admire her, the gift has to cost effort to find, not money. If it is that she feels looked after, it has to be something she would never buy for herself. If it is that she remembers the two of us, it has to outlast its own contents.

Second: does it stay in their house, or disappear?

Gifts that get consumed — wine, chocolates, flowers — are generous and they are brief. They do the job, and they go. The ones that stay keep talking months later, every time they are seen.

The middle ground, which is the hardest to find, is the object that is consumed on the inside and remains on the outside: a container that outlives what it holds. It is enjoyed twice, and the second time lasts years.

Third: could anyone else give them exactly the same thing?

This is the one that eliminates almost everything. If the answer is yes, it does not matter what it cost: it is an item, not a gift.

What cannot be repeated is not always expensive. It is usually made by hand, in a specific place, by someone with a name. A piece painted freehand cannot be duplicated, not even by the person who painted it.

Now, depending on who it is for

Every case has its own logic. These guides work it out:

The three pieces

The Oaxaca single-origin coffee. Whole bean microlot. The choice when you want to signal judgment without creating a debt.

The Flora vessel. Three and a half ounces of raw wildflower honey in hexagonal ceramic painted by hand, with the bee modeled in relief piece by piece. The choice when the gesture has to be precise without being monumental: the teacher, the house you are going to for dinner, the person who covered your shift.

The Enredadera vessel. Ceramic painted by hand in Santa María Canchesdá with monofloral mesquite honey from Jalisco inside. An edition of 700 numbered pieces that will not be repeated. The choice when the gift has to be the centerpiece.

What comes with all three

Protective packaging built for ceramic, a card written by hand with the message you give us, and shipping from our warehouse in McAllen, Texas, calculated at checkout. Several pieces travel in one box at a single cost. The package carries no prices and no visible invoice, so you can send it straight to their door.
